Public invited to view drawings of the K-12 Souris School

Education and Early Childhood Development

Planning for the Souris K-12 School continues to move forward and the public is invited to view the plans at an information meeting August 9, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac.

“We have reached an exciting point in the project where we can share the floor plans and site drawings with the community,” said the minister. “The $20 million facility will provide a beautiful, spacious and high quality learning environment that will meet the community’s needs for years to come.”

Over the past year, the planning committee has worked hard to move the project forward. The committee includes two principals and teachers from both Souris schools, three representatives from the Eastern School District as well as parent representatives and departmental staff. Committee members continued to meet over the past number of months to define the space requirements and develop the preliminary design. Their work focused on ensuring that students will have access to all the programs and services necessary for an exceptional educational experience.

The K-12 school will be more than 120,000 square feet. More than half of the space will be new construction and the remaining space will be completely upgraded. Among its many features, the school will have a new K-6 academic wing, a culinary teaching area, enhanced IT and trades spaces, two gymnasiums and three playgrounds.

Minister McIsaac encourages people to come to the high school cafeteria and view the drawings. “For the first time, people will be able to see what the school will look like, the programming it will offer students, and the many features it will offer the community as a whole.”

The planning and design for the school is being done by W.D. Lawrence Architecture. The committee has accepted the floor plan and will be proceeding with a site plan that does not require closure of Longworth Street.

The drawings will be available for viewing at an open house on Thursday, August 9 at 7 p.m in the cafeteria at the Souris High School. Members of the planning committee, architect Wil Lawrence, officials from the Eastern School District and engineers from the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal will be on hand to provide information, answer questions and hear feedback from residents regarding proposed floor plans and site drawings for the Souris K-12 school. Please join us for this important session.

APM has been selected as the construction manager for the project. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2013 and the school is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.
