By implementing a few simple fire safety measures we can all help prevent the needless loss of lives and property, says Environment, Labour and Justice Minister Janice Sherry.

Fire Prevention Week, October 7 - 13, is recognized nationally every year to increase public awareness of the dangers of fire and remind citizens of the ways to protect against human and material loss due to fire. The theme for 2012 is Have Two Ways Out.

“When fire strikes, your home can be engulfed in smoke and flames in just a few minutes,” said Provincial Fire Marshal Dave Rossiter. “What if your main escape route is blocked by smoke or flames?”

The Prince Edward Island Fire Marshal’s Office encourages everyone to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work and school, not only during Fire Prevention Week, but throughout the entire year.

• Plan your escape route now and practise often.

• Know two ways out of every room and your home.

• Test your smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms save lives.

“I encourage everyone to take the time to prepare your family for an emergency,” said Ms. Sherry. “It can save your life.”

Fire Prevention Week is promoted by municipal and rural fire services, Fire Prevention Canada, the Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners, the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, and the Provincial Fire Chiefs Associations.
