A new Guide to Early Years Autism Services will provide parents with more information on the services and supports available for young children with autism, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac.

“It can be difficult for families to know what supports are available to them,” said Minister McIsaac. “We are pleased to provide parents with a guide that reflects our present knowledge of autism and information on best practices which will help improve access to services for young children with autism and their families.”

The early years are extremely important, and it is essential that parents have the information they need about the intervention programs and services available across government. The guide identifies supports for families through the early years when a child is diagnosed, from referral to assessment and intervention. It also includes information to support the child’s transition to the school system. Every child is unique, so interventions and strategies represent a continuum that is based on each child’s individual needs and skills.

“I would like to thank members of the Early Years Autism Team as well as many others who contributed to the development of this resource, including parents, professionals and community partners,” said McIsaac.
