Infrastructure improvements will enable the Community of O’Leary to upgrade an area ball field to meet softball Canada’s standards and host a national softball tournament this summer. The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Honourable Ron MacKinley, PEI Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, today announced support and project details.

“Sport fields bring our communities together and promote social and physical well-being for residents and guests. With funding from our Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, the Community of O’Leary can ensure the safety of field users and also provide a top-notch facility for athletes and fans,” said Minister Shea.

The Government of Canada, through ACOA, will invest $16,380 from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The Government of Prince Edward Island will invest $12,870 through the Island Community Fund. The Community of O’Leary will contribute $9,750 to the project costs.

“The province is very pleased to provide a contribution from Island Community Fund to improve the ball fields in O’Leary and enable the community to host a national ball tournament,” said Minister MacKinley. “This investment in infrastructure improvements will generate economic activity for local business and will build pride in the community.”

This project involves upgrades to two sports fields in the community of O’Leary. Work will consist of landscaping, purchasing innovative maintenance equipment, installing protective netting, an improved scoreboard, and a multi-use service building with washroom facilities. Work will be completed in time to host Softball Canada’s Under 16 National Girls Fast Pitch Championship in August 2013.

“The Community of O’Leary is very much looking forward to hosting this national tournament. And thanks to government support, we can undertake the necessary field upgrades to meet Softball Canada’s standards, for this event, and also attract other major events in the future,” said Mr. Stanley MacDonald, Chairperson, Community of O’Leary.

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government of Canada announced plans to further modernize Canada’s infrastructure by committing $150 million over two years for the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency is delivering the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund in Atlantic Canada with an allocation of $16.6 million.

The Prince Edward Island government is delivering funds to eligible infrastructure projects through the Island Community Fund, a multi-year funding commitment to address infrastructure needs in communities across the province.
