A program promoting Prince Edward Island seafood at summer festivals and events provides a great opportunity to showcase our high-quality seafood products to Islanders and visitors, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“While we are working hard to develop new markets for Prince Edward Island seafood, we recognize the value of promoting our seafood here at home and supporting our local fishers, retailers, processors, peddlers and others who work in the fishery,” Minister MacKinley said.

The department promotes Island seafood through the summer program Out of the Sea and Over the Coals. Two students travel to festivals and events across the province demonstrating how to barbeque seafood, offering samples of seafood such as lobsters, mussels, oysters, quahogs and halibut. They also give out recipes and answer questions about buying, storing and preparing seafood.

“The fishery is a strong contributor to the Island economy with a value of approximately $250 million,” said the minister. “It is the economic backbone in many rural communities providing jobs for more than 8,600 people. We are working to strengthen the industry and build a sustainable future for the fishery.”
