The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and the Honourable Robert Ghiz, Premier of Prince Edward Island, today joined company officials from Royal Star Foods Ltd. to announce funding to support an expansion at its facility.

“Royal Star Foods is an excellent example of how our Government is helping companies in rural areas to create jobs and remain competitive in the global marketplace,” said Minister Shea. “This new capacity comes at a good time and will help the company to take advantage of the Canada-EU Trade Agreement and the significant new markets it will open to our world-class seafood products.”

The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, has provided a repayable investment of $500,000. The Government of Prince Edward Island, through the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning, has invested $800,000 in this project.

“Royal Star is one of the largest and most modern seafood processing plants in eastern Canada. This project will increase its cold storage capacity for processed lobster and frozen bait and, in doing so, strengthen Royal Star’s ability to compete in the world seafood market,” said Premier Ghiz.

Royal Star Foods Ltd. is an innovative processor of Atlantic lobsters in various forms for both retail and food service. The company’s brand, Star of the Sea, is a well respected, world renowned brand due to its consistent high quality.

“We are pleased to receive federal and provincial support as we move forward with this expansion project,” said Francis Morrissey, General Manager, Royal Star Foods Ltd. “Our company is always looking to grow and expand, and increasing our cold storage capacity will help us meet immediate demands for our superior quality products.”

Royal Star Foods is expanding its cold storage facility to meet increased consumer demand for new product lines. The company will be able to increase efficiencies and be able to react more promptly to an increase in product demand.
