Each year, Teacher and School Staff Appreciation Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate our teachers and staff in schools across Prince Edward Island, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac.

“Teachers and school staff consistently go above and beyond to help our students achieve and I hope everyone will join me in thanking them for their dedication,” said Minister McIsaac. “Take a few minutes to thank a teacher or school staff member for the work they do to support our students each day.”

This week, February 9-14, 2014, Home and School Associations and School Councils across Canada celebrated National Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week. As part of the celebrations, Judy DesRoches and Alanna Gauthier were recognized with the PEI Home and School Federation’s Extra Mile Award. The award recognizes individuals who exemplify going the extra mile – over and above the call of duty.

Mrs. DesRoches is an educational assistant at Mischouche Consolidated School. She has been described as lifelong learner and a champion for the truly inclusive model of education that we strive for.

Ms. Gauthier is a Grade one teacher at Central Queens Elementary School. She goes the extra mile by being a role model for students, leading by example, and instilling values such as gratitude and respect for others.

“Parents and students are encouraged to thank teachers and staff for all they do to guide the learning of all students from kindergarten to Grade twelve in our education system,” added Pam Montgomery, President of the Prince Edward Island Home and School Federation. “Our two Extra Mile Award winners are wonderful examples of how teachers and staff help students learn and achieve.”
