A stellar line up of Canadian musical artists will take centre stage during one of the country’s largest Canada Day celebrations in Prince Edward Island where Canada got its start 150 years ago. Prince Edward Islanders and visitors will be treated to a free day-long Concert for Canada at the Charlottetown Event Grounds, capped off by the largest fireworks display in the entire country.

“2014 is a very significant year for Prince Edward Island and the whole country because it marks the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference that led to the creation of Canada,” says Prince Edward Island Minister of Tourism, Robert Henderson. “Prince Edward Island has long been the place to be on Canada Day, but in 2014 the commemoration of our nation’s birth will be bigger and better than ever. We anticipate many Canadians will want to take advantage of this unique opportunity to celebrate Canada in the province where it all began.”

Headlining the Canada Day 2014 Celebrations main stage will be the uniquely Canadian sound of international recording stars Barenaked Ladies; Juno winning rapper, Classified; Calgary’s indie rock duo and recent Juno winners, Tegan & Sara; critically acclaimed country artist, George Canyon; multi platinum-selling recording star, Roch Voisine; award-winning crooner, David Myles, and the spectacular performance of music, rhythm and dance by four of Canada’s founding cultures from the multicultural musical production, DRUM. The Charlottetown waterfront will be lit up like never before as this incredible concert is capped off with the largest Canada Day fireworks display in the country.

“The City of Charlottetown is pleased to partner with 2014 Inc. on Canada Day celebrations, resulting in a significant event that celebrates our county’s birthday, in the Birthplace of Confederation during this 150th anniversary year,” says Mayor Clifford Lee. “Our partnership heightens the entertainment options, including a grand fireworks display for everyone’s enjoyment.”

The Concert for Canada is a free family event taking place from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Charlottetown Event Grounds. The main stage programming will be complemented by Island artists performing on side stages between main stage acts. Details of additional fascinating and fun family activities will be announced in the coming weeks.

“From a musical production celebrating the Aboriginal, Celtic and Acadian cultures in DRUM! to the iconic Canadian rockers, Barenaked Ladies, Canada Day will have something for everyone,” says PEI 2014 Executive Director, Penny Walsh McGuire. “Islanders and visitors will want to stay tuned for future announcements about further elements of the Canada Day 2014 Celebrations.”

In 2014, Canadians will mark the 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which paved the way to Confederation. PEI 2014 Inc. is facilitating the planning, promotion and implementation of the Sesquicentennial celebrations. The PEI 2014 celebrations are made possible through generous support from the Government of Canada, the Government of Prince Edward Island, and the City of Charlottetown. The year-long and province-wide PEI 2014 program of events will honour the past, celebrate the present and plan a bold tomorrow.
