Increasing awareness and demand for Prince Edward Island’s top quality lobster is the goal of the province’s annual Love our Lobster campaign, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“Prince Edward Island is known for our high quality seafood products, including lobster, and our Island fishers, processors, retailers and peddlers work hard to deliver these products to our consumers,” said Minister MacKinley. “Love our Lobster is a great way for Islanders to show their support for our lobster industry and the people who work in it.”

More than 1,200 fishers are involved in the lobster fishery. Last year, more than 28 million pounds of lobster were landed. The Island lobster industry has an economic value in excess of $185 million.

The Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development is partnering with Ocean 100 and Hot 105.5 and 26 local retail outlets across the province to promote the sale of Island lobster. Anyone buying Island lobster at participating retail outlets will receive a ballot for a chance to win the grand prize, a private lobster dinner party. Various other prizes are also available.

“The lobster industry is a significant contributor to the economy of Prince Edward Island, and we are working to help increase demand for Island lobster and strengthen the industry,” said Minister MacKinley. “Islanders are encouraged to take part and make fresh local Island lobster a part of celebrations with family and friends.”

Love our Lobster will run from May 2 to June 25. Contest details and a list of participating retail outlets can be found at gov.pe.ca/loveourlobster.
