School-aged children on Prince Edward Island can improve their reading skills and have fun doing it by participating in the 2014 TD Summer Reading Club, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson.

“For more than ten years, the Public Library Service and TD Bank have partnered to deliver the Summer Reading Club at libraries across the Island,” said Minister Henderson. “One of the goals of the Public Library Service is to inspire a love of reading. By providing opportunities for children to read, to explore their imaginations, and to have fun doing it, we help set the foundation for a lifelong love of books.”

The TD Summer Reading Club is a free and inclusive bilingual program of Canadian public libraries that creates an opportunity for children and their families to make reading a fun part of their summer. Almost 2,000 local public libraries across Canada will offer family friendly programs aimed at keeping children reading. All Public library locations on the Island are participating in the program in 2014. The province’s program was launched today at the Stratford Public Library.

This year’s theme is “Eureka!” Club members are encouraged to be active with their hands and minds through creativity. They could write or act out a play, write a song, or plant a garden – any activity that encourages creativity. Kids can also earn stickers by achieving certain goals set by individual libraries.

New to the program this year are story mobs where club members perform a story in a public place. The date for Charlottetown’s story mob is June 28. The location for the event will remain a secret until June 21.
