A chartered professional accountant with an extensive background in federal, provincial, and municipal finance is Prince Edward Island’s new comptroller, says Finance, Energy and Municipal Affairs Minister Wes Sheridan.

“We are proud to have Gordon MacFadyen join our department in this critical role,” Minister Sheridan said. “Gordon has more than 20 years’ experience in budgeting and financial analysis in many facets of government, which will serve him well in his role as the province’s new top accountant.”

The Office of the Comptroller operates and maintains the province’s corporate accounting system and prepares financial statements that are as transparent as possible for the Legislature and the public. The position works to streamline accounting practices and provides support and advice to Treasury Board and Cabinet on financial management and policy.

MacFadyen was most recently the director of Finance and School Board Operations for the province’s Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, where he was responsible for all aspects of the budget process. He previously held financial management positions with the province’s Department of Health, the city of Summerside, and the Office of the Auditor General of Canada.

He graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island and obtained his chartered accountant designation in Ontario while working with the federal Auditor General’s office. He is currently an active member of the Chartered Professional Accountants Association of PEI, serving as the chair of the Professional Conduct Committee.

The Summerside resident is a volunteer firefighter for the Summerside Fire Department and is secretary/treasurer of the PEI Firefighters Association.

“It is an honour to be chosen to serve the province in this capacity,” MacFadyen said. “Good fortune has allowed me to work with and learn from many dedicated public servants at all levels, and I look forward to continuing that trend with this new opportunity.”
