Islanders can do their part to help protect and promote one of the most important venues for outdoor activity in the province by becoming a trail volunteer on the Confederation Trail, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson.

“The Confederation Trail is the Island’s premiere venue for walking, running and cycling, and it is one of the province’s most important tourism assets,” said Minister Henderson. “Trail volunteers play an important role in promoting the trail by providing information to trail users. They also help to protect the trail from improper use by referring illegal activities to the proper authorities.”

The province is looking to recruit as many volunteers as possible to help patrol the trail this summer. As part of their duties they will pass out maps and provide information to trail users. They will also work in unison with a team of provincial conservation officers who patrol the trail and are able to produce citations for illegal activities like the use of ATV’s and dirt bikes which can be dangerous to trail users and can severely damage the trail surface.

“Our team of Conservation Officers do a great job patrolling and protecting the trail during the summer months when usage is at its highest, but they can’t be everywhere at once,” said Minister of Environment, Labour and Justice Janice Sherry. “I encourage all Islanders interested in becoming a trail volunteer to sign up to help protect and promote the Confederation Trail this summer.”

This year Prince Edward Island will fully complete the Confederation Trail, which is the province’s portion of the Trans Canada Trail, three years ahead of the 2017 deadline. Once all sections are complete the Trail will measure 444 kilometers. That includes the main sections from Tignish to Elmira and from Borden-Carleton to Wood Islands, as well as branch trails from Mount Stewart to Montague, Georgetown and Cardigan, from Harmony Junction to Souris and from Wood Islands to Murray Harbour.

For more information or to sign up to be a trail volunteer please contact Ruth Delong, Trails Community Relations Coordinator, at (902) 394-1645 or by email at redelong@gov.pe.ca.
