Thousands of students from across the province are participating in organized tours and visits to historic sites as part of the RBC Celebrate 2014 School Program, a legacy project of the PEI 2014 Celebrations.

“We are hearing very positive feedback about the organized visits to historic sites from students, parents and teachers,” said Minister McIsaac. “Learning about our province is an important component of the curriculum in our school system. Our students have always spent time studying the Charlottetown Conference, and these organized visits are enhancing the students’learning.”

The RBC Celebrate 2014 School Program provides Island teachers access to activities linked to curriculum for use in the classroom. These activities are available in both official languages and they are designed to inspire students to learn more about the Charlottetown Conference. There are activities for all grade levels (K to 12) and the activities are now available online at PEI2014.ca.

To complement classroom learning, throughout September, October and November, students in Grade 4 and up are participating in organized tours of historic sites including Province House National Historic Site, Government House, Roma at Three Rivers, and the Farmers Bank. Students are also visiting exhibits at Eptek Centre and the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Island schools and teachers have widely embraced this opportunity made possible through a partnership between PEI 2014 Inc, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and RBC.

“A new generation of Island students who are inspired by our shared history will be a tremendous legacy of the PEI 2014 celebrations,” said Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson. “Bringing awareness to our Island students about our role in the creation of Canada will ensure that these celebrations live well beyond 2014.”

In 2014, Canadians will mark the 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which paved the way to Confederation. PEI 2014 Inc. is facilitating the planning, promotion and implementation of the Sesquicentennial celebrations. The PEI 2014 celebrations are made possible through generous support from the Government of Canada, the Government of Prince Edward Island, and the City of Charlottetown. The year-long and province-wide PEI 2014 program of events will honour the past, celebrate the present and plan a bold tomorrow.
