Statement from Premier Robert Ghiz on the 250th Anniversary of the Samuel Holland Survey of Prince Edward Island

Monday, October 6, marks the 250th anniversary of the beginning of Samuel Holland’s Survey of Prince Edward Island, a significant event in the development of our province and the whole of British North America. In 1764 Samuel Holland, Surveyor General of British North America, was ordered by the Crown to survey British North America and he chose to begin his survey at St. John’s Island, currently Prince Edward Island.
“In 1765 Samuel Holland completed the first truly modern, accurate map of Prince Edward Island, dividing it into townships and counties, and designating its county capitals,” says Premier Robert Ghiz. “Captain Holland’s map has had a profound impact on the development of our province. In 2015, we will mark this important anniversary with a series of commemorative activities that will help us better appreciate the influence Holland’s survey and map have had on our Island identity.”
