“Volunteer community organizations are the backbone of strong communities and it is important that government works with them to ensure the good work they do in our communities can continue,” said Minister MacKinley. “The Province of Prince Edward Island will continue to support our local community organizations in their work to upgrade existing infrastructure and create a better quality of life for all Islanders now and into the future.”

The Province of Prince Edward Island, through the Island Community Fund, has provided over $46,000 to three community organizations to support these projects.

• York Point Historical Society Inc. received $39,000 for restoration of the York Point School which will be used community meetings and events;

• Town of Cornwall received $7,094 to enhance the two ball fields at the Terry Fox Complex and the East Wiltshire School;

• Hampshire Women’s Institute received $600 to renovate Hampshire Hall.

The total value of the three projects is almost $71,000.

“A group of Cornwall residents came together with a desire to use and enjoy the old York Point School. With the help of the provincial government, various trades and a lot of volunteer time, the first phase of the renovation is nearly complete,” said Philip Pater, Chair of the York Point Historical Society. “The 160 year old building has an important historical value for the town and needs to be preserved for future generations.”

“The Island Community Fund helps build stronger rural communities by enhancing economic opportunities, supporting recreational opportunities, increasing public safety and strengthening community spirit,” said Minister MacKinley. “We will continue to invest in projects that support our Island communities from tip to tip.”

Since 2009, the Island Community Fund has invested nearly $20 million to support more than 400 projects across the province, with a total project value of $67 million.
