Breakfast and Snack Programs
Through a partnership with the PEI Healthy Eating Alliance, the PEI Government is supporting the provincial expansion and enhancement of school breakfast and snack programs. School food programs (breakfast/snack) are but one component of a strong school nutrition policy.Since 2008, 44 new programs have been created within various schools and alternative education sites across the province. In 2015-16, approximately 8,000 students are being provided food through a total of 65 programs with the support of approximately 600 volunteers.
Funding for school breakfast/snack programs helps to:
- increase the number of programs available to students;
- encourages healthy eating;
- helps ensure more students come to class prepared to learn;
- and supports positive nutrition habits which improve academic achievement.
