Biographical history
Robert Allan Rankin was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. He is a musician and song-writer and was an active member of the Maritime Art Association. He has also held several government positions including Deputy Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs and is currently the executive director of the Wyatt Heritage Properties in Summerside. He is also the author of several articles for the "Island magazine" and of a book entitled "Down at the Shore, A History of Summerside, P.E.I. (1752-1945)" which was commissioned in 1974 as a joint project of the Town of Summerside and the Journal Publishing Company.

Scope and content
This fonds consists of 171 photographs which relate to Summerside and area. These photos were collected by Allan Rankin in the process of writing his book "Down by the Shore: a history of Summerside, Prince Edward Island (1752-1945)". 56 of the prints in this collection will be found throughout the pages of the book; the remainder were not used. They include interior and exterior shots of businesses, homes, churches, people (some identified/some not), street scenes, vessels, events; etc.
