Biographical history
A passenger list indicates that an Andrew MacDonald came to Prince Edward Island aboard the brig "Isle of Skye" on the 23 September 1806, when he was fifty five years old. A land petition dated the 17 February 1807 states that Andrew MacDonald of Three Rivers was a merchant who had recently arrived from Scotland with his family and had settled intending to carry on trade and commerce, and by 1807, had loaded three ships with lumber for Europe. By 1817, Andrew MacDonald was in partnership with his sons Angus and Colin MacDonald, and carried on trade and commerce under the official title of "Andrew MacDonald and Sons." Andrew MacDonald, a native of the Island of Shona, died on the 30 May 1833 at Panmure Island, P. E. I.
Custodial history
Scope and content
This series consists of primarily correspondence, financial papers, and legal documents created by or transmitted to Andrew Macdonald, spanning the years 1779 to 1832. The correspondence documents arrangements Andrew made for purchasing and/or leasing land in Prince Edward Island, tenant issues on his property, as well as business transactions with his sons and associates in England, Scotland, and Prince Edward Island. The financial papers include accounts with business in Scotland and England such as Ranald MacDonald, Saddler of Glasgow, and with his son Alex who appears to have been overseeing the property in Lot 8. Legal papers include memorandum of agreements for the purchase/lease of land and a notice of dissolution of the firm Andrew Macdonald and Sons dated 1822. Also included in this series are a diary which appears to document business transactions and travel in England and Scotland between 1 August 1823 and 6 June 1826 as well as a map and description of the 200 acres of property in Lot 52. The contents of this series are arranged in chronological order by the latest date in a particular document.
