Biographical history
Benjamin D. Higgs was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on 17 November 1865, the son of B. Wilson and Amelia Higgs. Following training with the Patriot and Pioneer newspapers, he became the editor of the Guardian newspaper in December 1890. He is credited with turning the newspaper into a daily rather than a weekly and rendering it independent in politics. He died at the age of 31 on 16 November 1896.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds contains two letters, one signed and one not, from Wilfrid Laurier, Member of Parliament for Quebec East and later Prime Minister of Canada to B. D. Higgs, briefly expressing his views on the construction of a tunnel between Prince Edward Island and the main land. There are also covering letters to B. D. Higgs and to Louis Henry Davies, Member of Parliament for Queens, Prince Edward Island and later Premier of P.E.I. and Chief Justice of Canada. At the time both Laurier and Davies were campaigning for the 1891 election.
