Henry Smith of Charlottetown, (1851-1941), son of William Smith (1817-1897) and Elizabeth Alley (ca. 1822-1869). Henry Smith was a carpenter, and later Clerk of the Queen's County Court. Henry Smith was a co-worker and distant relative of Judge George Alley. Smith was co-executor of George Alley's will along with John D. Reid, Manager of the Telephone Co. Smith was a Water Commissioner for the City of Charlottetown.

Custodial history

This fonds consists of a diary, written in a converted ledger during the voyage, which has been passed down through the family over the years and now resides in the hands of one of the two sons of Reverend John Smith, son of Henry Smith. The partial transcription, with editorial notes was made by Alan Graham of Auckland, New Zealand.

Scope and content

The diary contains an account of the voyage from the port of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on 2 December 1858 to arrival just off the harbour of Auckland on 9 May 1859. Graham appears to have transcribed entries in their entirety to the end of January and from then on to have combined this with a precis of some "less interesting" sections. Details recorded include raging storms and becalming doldrums, course and mileage covered, food, illnesses encountered, and behavior of passengers. There is no account of the passengers first impressions of their new home. Also included is a copy of the survey of the "Prince Edward" declaring her fit for the voyage and a page of genealogical notes re. Henry Smith and his son John.
