Biographical history

John Ready was born circa 1777. He had a varied career as an army officer, office holder, politician, and colonial administrator. He served as Lieutenant Governor for the colony of Prince Edward Island from 1824 to 1831. In 1832 he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, a post which he held until his death in 1845.

For a time before moving to Prince Edward Island Ready worked in various capacities for Charles Lennox, the 4th Duke of Richmond. His connection with the influential Richmonds continued throughout his life. The 5th Duke, a Conservative politician, lavish spender, and friend to Ready, used his position to assist Ready in his administrative career, advocating on Ready's behalf for the position as Lieutenant Governor for the Isle of Man.

Custodial history

Scope and content

This fonds contains 103 letters written from 1828 to 1843 by John Ready. One hundred of the letters are to Charles Lennox, the 5th Duke of Richmond, two are to the Duke's physician, and one is to the Duke's wife. Many of the letters seek the Duke's intervention or assistance in matters regarding Ready's career or that of his son, Charles. Other subjects include: administrative issues, the erection of a monument in Quebec to the 4th Duke of Richmond, and news of mutual acquaintances. Only the first six letters were written while Ready was resident on Prince Edward Island (although there is an occasional reference to Prince Edward Island in the later letters). The letters were written in various places: one in Halifax, fifteen in England, three in Scotland, one in Ireland, and the remainder on the Isle of Man.
