Scope and content
This booklet was produced by the Memorial Committee of the Prince Edward Island Hospital as part of its campaign to raise funds for the building of a new hospital through subscriptions to fund a room, department, or feature of the proposed hospital as memorials to specific individuals. The illustrated text highlights specific departments and activities of the hospital.
The Prince Edward Island Hospital was first located on Longworth Avenue in Charlottetown in a building purchased from H. J. Cundall in the mid 1880s. In 1898 a new hospital was built on Kensington Road. By 1923 this hospital was in debt and a campaign mounted to pay off the debt and renovate the building. However, it was felt that it would be impossible to make effective changes in the old building. Consequently a second campaign was organized by the Trustees of the Hospital to raise an additional $250,000 dollars to build a new building on a site to be chosen by the public at large. On 10 October 1932 the cornerstone was laid for the third Prince Edward Island Hospital situated on a property on Brighton Road. In 1977 a decision was made by the PEI Government to amalgamate the two existing hospitals, the Charlottetown Hospital and the Prince Edward Island Hospital into one institution later named the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
