Biographical history

Katherine “Katie” Beaton was born 1 March 1884 in East Point, Prince Edward Island, to James Angus Beaton and Mary Ford. Katie studied nursing at the Boston City Hospital Training School for Nurses in Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America, and graduated in 1916. She served as a nurse in World War I with the United States Base Hospitals No. 7 and No. 22 at Joué-les-Tours, Département de Indre et Loire, France. Following the war, Katie returned to the United States and worked at the Boston City Hospital for a time. She married Peter Holland (1887-1949) on 15 September 1920. The couple had three children (Beatrice, Henry, and Charles) in addition to Peter’s five children from an earlier marriage (Mary, Mae, Anne, Joseph, and Thomas). Katie continued her work as a nurse in various Island communities. She died 12 April 1959 at the age of 75 and was buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Charlottetown.
