Administrative history
The Belfast Historical Society was founded at a public meeting held on 26 March 1976. The principle objective of the society was to promote and encourage an interest in the history of the Belfast district. Among its activities were the sponsoring of public lectures on local and Island history and the production of a newsletter called the Recaller. In 1977 the society sponsored a project to sponsor a commuity oral history archives. University students were hired through a Summer Canada Works project to collect taped acounts from more tham 20 elderly residents. In the fall of 1980 the tapes were transcribed and edited and further information collected. In 1992 Belfast people, a collection of the transcribed and edited tapes of twenty-seven residents of the Belfast area, was published.
