Palmer, Edward (1809-1889)

Biographical history

The Hon. Edward Palmer, son of James Bardin Palmer (1771-1833) and Millicent Jones Palmer (1779?-1875), was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on 1 September 1809. The third of eight sons, Edward was a lawyer, politician and Father of Confederation. At twenty-four, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly for Charlottetown (1833-1860) after which he became a member of the Legislative Council (1860-1873). He was appointed to the Queen's Council (1857), Solicitor General for Prince Edward Island (1845-1851), appointed a Judge in the Queen's County Court (1873), and Chief Justice for Prince Edward Island (1874). He married Isabella Phoebe Tremaine (1820-1914), daughter of Benjamin Tremaine of Quebec on 22 September 1846. They had nine children, one of whom, Herbert James Palmer (1851-1939), went on to become the eleventh Premier of Prince Edward Island. Edward Palmer died in Charlottetown on 3 November 1889

The fonds contains correspondence between the Hon. Edward Palmer concerning the acceptance and resignation of various government positions. Also included are various commission papers received by Edward Palmer and leases documenting the conveyance of pasture lots (199 & 240).
