Biographical history

Roderick Munn, son of Neil Munn and Elizabeth MacLeod, was born in Lot 48, Prince Edward Island, on 17 April 1835. Following a childhood in Lot 48 and education at Free Church College in Halifax, Roderick Munn lived and farmed for many years in Wood Islands, moving to the Marshfield area at some time during the keeping of this diary, most likely in the 1880's. In 1863 he married Jane Miller Robertson of St. Peter's Road with whom he had at least six children. A farmer and insurance agent for the Central Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Munn, a Liberal by political persuasion, represented 2d Queens in the Legislative Council from 1874-1882. He also served in the 3d Queens Regiment of Militia. Roderick Munn died in 1927.

Custodial history

Scope and content

This fonds consists of a ledger which might more correctly be called an account book and diary. It documents Munn's accounts with various persons and firms in both the Wood Islands and Marshfield areas including the Dunstaffnage Cheese and Butter Company. The remainder of the volume is really a yearly calendar of his farming activities; when plowing and planting took place, what varieties of seed he used, in what quantities, yield and disposal of crops. Loose papers include pages supplementing accounts for estates for which Munn served as executor, i.e. Elizabeth Goff, Hector Munn, Stephen Mills, and William Bell, byelaws of the Central Mutual Fire Insurance Co., and a draft address to [Donald Montgomery?] on the occasion of his departure for the Canadian Senate by the residents of French Fort, Dunstaffnage, Suffolk, Marshfield, Little York, etc. in recognition of his efforts in procuring the right for them to purchase their lands.
