Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of an account book that originally belonged to Alexander McLellan (1786-1867). The account book spans the years 1817 to 1949, but the majority of the records are between 1817 and 1910. The book contains the family's accounts for their farm in Indian River but also contains marriages in Indian River (1858-1910), a history of the early settlers of Indian River, a farm daybook (1873-1899; 1905-1909), genealogical information about the McLellan family and family correspondence. The fonds also includes a typed essay entitled "Early Settlers of Indian River" which seems to be a transcription of an item that appeared in the "Summerside Journal," 9 March 1898.

General note
The essay "Early Settlers of Indian River" was transcribed and reprinted a number of times. There are known to be some variations in the different versions. Users should consult the "Summerside Journal" (9 March 1898, page 1) for what is believed to be the original and most complete version by John R. McLellan. The "Summerside Journal" can be found on microfilm in the Reading Room. Users can also consult the McLellan family file for more information
