Administrative history
The National Film Board, with its mandate "to interpret Canada to Canadians and to other nations," was created by an Act of Parliament on 2 May 1939. Over 8,000 productions and some 3,000 awards later, the Board continues to operate as one of the most vibrant and relevant cultural agencies in Canada. This public agency procudes and distributes films and other audiovisual works which relfect Canada to Canadians and the world. The Board of Trustees of the NFB consists of nine members. Four of them, including the Government Film Commissioner who is also Chairperson of the Board, are from the public sector and five are prominent citizens, representing the major geographic regions of Canada.

This fonds consists of 86 photographs covering a wide variety of subject matter. The largest number of photos are of people. Unfortunately, all but one (Chief John Thomas Sark) are unidentified. There are also a few miscellaneous shots and a number of non-Island photographs.
