Scope and content
The series contains annual reports, 1950-1968, correspondence of Frank MacKinnon while President and Chancellor of Prince of Wales, miscellaneous PWC publications, and newspaper clippings. Most of the material consists of documents relating to the College’s achievement of degree-granting status, the plan for future development and the bitter struggle which ended in the amalgamation of the College with St. Dunstan’s University to become the University of Prince Edward Island.
In 1860 Prince of Wales College succeeded the earlier classical Central Academy which had opened in 1836. Commonly referred to as PWC, the College offered two years of high school and two years of university and included a Normal School for the training of teachers. In 1966 it became a university with degree-granting status but in 1969 was amalgamated with St. Dunstan's University to become the University of Prince Edward Island. The buildings became the home of Holland College, a technical college.
