Public Archives and Records Office of Prince Edward Island
The mandate of the Public Archives and Records Office is to acquire, preserve and make available for public research, the government records of PEI and those private sector records of individuals, companies andinstitutions, deemed to be of historical value as they pertain to the history of Prince Edward Island. Along with textual documents such as correspondence files, diaries, journals, and newspapers, the Public Archives also holds materials in other formats including photographs, architectural drawings, maps, microforms, film and sound recordings. The Archives holds a large collection of genealogical resources including indexes to many vital records such as census returns, marriage, baptism and death records, dated largely prior to 1902. The holdings of the PARO include more than 1500 linear metres of government records, 680 metres of private sector records, close to 5000 maps, 1300 architectural plans, 40,000 photographs, and approximately 4700 hours of audio-visual materials.
Under the Archives and Records Act, the Public Archives and Records Office acquires, preserves, and makes available for public research the records of the Government of Prince Edward Island, as well as private sector records deemed to be of lasting historical value.
The Public Archives Unit carries out archival functions, engages in education and outreach in the community, and provides reference services to government and members of the public wanting access to the archival holdings.
The Recorded Information Management Unit is responsible for delivering a corporate program that provides central recorded information management services and support to all departments, agencies, corporations, and commissions within the Government of Prince Edward Island.

NOTE: All visitors to the Atlantic Technology Centre are required to sign in at the Security Desk on the main level.

Automatic doors are available at the Great George Street entrance and there is an elevator in the building.
Some street parking is available. There are also two parking garages within walking distance, including the Fitzroy Parkade (130 Fitzroy Street) next to the building.
