Biographical history
Born in England in 1778, Sir John Harvey was appointed deputy adyitent - general of the British forces in North America in 1812. He was knighted for his war effort in 1814. He was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island in 1836, but held the post for only nine months. He was appointed Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick in 1837. He married Elizabeth Lake in 1806. Sir John Harvey died in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 22 March 1852.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of two letterbooks Sir John Harvey kept during his term as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island and Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. The first letterbook written in Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick between 1836 and 1837, contains a list of 179 letters sent, 196 pages of handwritten letters, and a message from Sir John Harvey which is also documented in the Journal of the House of Assembly for Prince Edward Island 24 January 1837. This message addresses the need for a building to house the deposits of all public records, and the need of a Provincial Hospital or Infirmary on Prince Edward Island. The letterbook for New Brunswick dated 1839-1841 contains a list of 70 letters sent and 253 pages of handwritten letters. All the letters contained within these books relate to government affairs.
