Name of creator

Halliday, Thomas (fl.1806-1818)

Biographical history

Thomas Halliday immigrated to Prince Edward Island from Scotland in 1806 accompanied by his wife, children, and Mary Cochrane (1799-1859), believed to be the only daughter of Thomas Douglas (1771-1820), the Earl of Selkirk. A farm was granted to him in the Belfast area, Prince Edward Island, which was then part of the large Selkirk Estate. He was also a skilled stone mason. He and his wife had six children. Mary Cochrane later married one of Thomas Halliday's sons.

Custodial history

Scope and content

This fonds consists of three letters relating to Thomas Halliday and his emigration to Prince Edward Island. The first letter, dated 28 October 1815, from Thomas Halliday to the Earl of Selkirk relays the difficulties Halliday encountered upon arriving on Prince Edward Island in that he did not receive the grant of land, located near present day Belfast, promised to him by Selkirk. The remaining letters, dated 4 July 1818, are written by the Earl of Selkirk who attempts to address the problem and are addressed to Thomas Halliday and to William Johnston, Selkirk's agent.
