Island students to attend Canada-Wide Science Fair in Alberta
Education and Early Childhood Development
Prince Edward Island will be well represented at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Lethbridge, Alberta, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac
“Science fairs encourage students to learn and enjoy science,” said Minister McIsaac. “These types of extracurricular activities help students develop scientific literacy as well as build confidence and project management skills. Congratulations to all participants and best wishes to those advancing to the national event next month.”
Five students from grades 7 - 12 will represent Prince Edward Island at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Lethbridge, Alberta, May 11 - 18.
• Hailey Brake and Shruthi Bandi from Queen Charlotte Intermediate are investigating how micro-organisms can be useful to humans.
• Neil Kelley and Gavin Kerr from Queen Charlotte Intermediate are looking into “Medicines from Sea Squirts?”
• Pieter VanLeeuwen from École François-Buote is examining “Muscle and determination.”
The provincial science fair for students in grades 7 - 12 was held at the University of Prince Edward Island on April 3. An event for grades 4 - 6 will take place at East Wiltshire Intermediate School on April 24. With this new format, the organizers will be able to provide for more age-appropriate science activities for the participants.
“Island students don’t have to look far for inspiration,” said Minister McIsaac. “Prince Edward Island is a leader in investing into sectors of aerospace, bioscience, information technology and renewable energy. When we invest in innovative thinking and education, we invest in our community and our future.”
Prince Edward Island students will join other young scientists from grades 7 - 12 across the country in competing for medals and prizes worth over $1,000,000. PEI hosted this prestigious national event in 2012 which gave students an opportunity to view experiments and learn from some of the brightest young minds in the country.
