Seafood exporting capabilities increasing at the Charlottetown Airport
Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development
The Charlottetown Airport Authority is taking steps to enhance its role as the gateway to the world for Prince Edward Island’s famous seafood products. The Airport recently formed a partnership with the PEI Seafood Processors’ Association to support export growth, and ensure the supply of quality seafood shipped through the airport by installing a new high-efficiency walk-in cooler.
The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Honourable Allen Roach, PEI Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning and Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development today announced government support for the Charlottetown Airport Authority to purchase and install the new cooler. The announcement comes as both Ministers are in Boston attending the Seafood Expo North America event (formerly known as the International Boston Seafood Show), North America’s largest seafood trade exposition.
With the cooler in place at the airport, Island seafood processors will no longer have to return to the airport to pick up undelivered goods when flights are delayed, cancelled, or if cargo space is at capacity, as was the case previously.
Island seafood processors stand to benefit from the historic Canada and European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which will eliminate tariffs on PEI seafood exports, providing access to the lucrative European market for their world-renowned products.

• The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is supporting the Charlottetown Airport Authority with a $10,000 contribution.
• The Province of Prince Edward Island will contribute $8,000 towards this project through the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development.
• The Charlottetown Airport Authority Inc. is a non-profit corporation that manages and operates the Charlottetown Airport and business park. The group is governed by a Board of Directors, representative of the community and individuals with experience in a variety of areas.
• The PEI Seafood Processors Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing advocacy, training and marketing support for its members, acting as a liaison on behalf of seafood processors with governments and regulatory bodies that impact the sector.
• The Charlottetown Airport’s new cooler will directly benefit exporters by reducing shipping costs and product loss, carriers will benefit from an increase in cargo packages being shipped, harvesters will benefit from increased demand, and clients will receive the freshest quality seafood products.
