A colorful classroom poster, teachers’ guide, parent handout, and children’s song sheet promoting healthy eating and active living are being delivered to daycare centres, kindergartens, and Grade One and Two classrooms across the province. The Be Healthy kits will be distributed early in the new year.

Geared toward children aged four to eight, their parents and educators, the kits are an initiative of the Healthy Eating Alliance and the PEI Active Living Alliance as part of the Children’s Working Group Healthy Lifestyles network. Funding for the project was received through Partnerships for Children, an initiative of the PEI Healthy Child Development Strategy.

The materials were developed to ensure that Island children learn the importance of healthy eating and an active lifestyle at an early age. Recent studies show that Prince Edward Island lags behind the rest of the country in the areas of physical activity and healthy eating.

Jennifer Taylor, Chair of the PEI Healthy Eating Alliance, says it’s important to start children on the right track when they are young. “Healthy eating and active living are essential for the proper growth and development of children.”

Dawn Binns, President of the PEI Active Living Alliance agrees. “Activity levels and eating habits are major factors in the growing prevalence of childhood obesity across Canada. Instilling good activity levels and healthy eating habits early in life is critical to promoting healthy child development, and are crucial in the reduction of the incidence of chronic disease later in life.”

The PEI Healthy Eating Alliance is a group of more than 40 community, post secondary, and government organizations that work together to improve the eating habits of children and youth. The Alliance was established in 2001 to promote and educate children and youth, and to help create supportive environments.

The PEI Active Living Alliance is a provincial non-profit organization comprised of organizations and groups committed to active healthy lifestyles. The Alliance works with community and government organizations to help increase the physical activity levels of all Islanders.
