Over Two Million Dollars Invested in Charlottetown Airport

The airport expansion will soon become a reality thanks to a $2.1 million contribution from the Canada-Prince Edward Island Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
“I am pleased to announce that Canada’s New Government will contribute over $711,000 for the expansion of the Charlottetown Airport,” said Minister MacKay. “We are pleased to work collaboratively with the Province of PEI and the Charlottetown Airport Authority on this important project. The expansion will provide direct benefits to visitors, residents, and the Island economy.”
Air traffic at the Charlottetown Airport has increased substantially from 158,746 passengers in 2002 to an estimated 223,000 for 2006. This increase has led to the demand for an expansion to the current facility to accommodate current and future requirements.
“This project will further the goal of securing quality air access to help create opportunity in trade, transportation and tourism. Today’s announcement will do just that, increasing our ability to welcome tourists and to welcome Islanders past, present and future to our province,” said Premier Binns.
Renovations for the airport include a 1026.5 square metre addition of new floor space to the air terminal building which will serve as an off-loading area and a passenger greeting section, the installation of a second incoming baggage handling belt to better handle the arrival of simultaneous flights, as well as an expanded entrance area and washroom facilities.
“Our vision and mission for the Charlottetown Airport centres around providing up-to-date and modern facilities to maximize the attraction of air travel to PEI,” said Mr. Campbell. “We are pleased to partner with the federal and provincial governments to further advance the infrastructure at our facility which will better position us to attract new airlines and new travelers to the Island.”
Through MRIF, each of the three contributing partners, the Governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island and the Charlottetown Airport Authority Inc., will contribute $711,926.

BACKGROUND:
The Charlottetown Airport Authority (CAA) was incorporated in 1996 under the Canada Corporations Act as a not-for-profit corporation. That same year, the CAA signed an agreement with the Government of Canada to transfer control of the Charlottetown Airport to the Authority. With this transfer, the CAA became responsible for operating costs, human resource costs, engineering, architectural, property management, legal costs as well as the capital funds required to meet the needs for future years.
