Participate in PEI - Government Introduces New and Open Approach to Appointments to Agencies, Boards and Commissions

Executive Council

An open, public call for participation in over 70 of the Island’s Agencies, Boards and Commissions (ABCs) will promote government openness, says Premier Robert Ghiz.

“The new process highlights the first step in a new fair and transparent process for appointments,” the Premier said.

“Participate in PEI is an initiative that I hope will engage a new generation of Islanders in the governing process,” Premier Ghiz said. “Transparency and fairness are among our key commitments, and this process continues us down a path to achieve that goal.”

A public call for “Letters of Interest” is being issued in Island newspapers starting Wednesday, August 29. A website is being developed that will contain a profile of each ABC, including qualifications, length of term, current make-up and nomination requirements. The website work will be in progress throughout the fall and winter. Once complete, the website will also highlight vacancies, so that applicants can ensure that their letter of interest is in on-time.

Policies and procedures related to the appointment process will continue to be developed; however, there are a number of critical vacancies, such as those with the Heritage Places Advisory Board and Museum and Heritage Foundation that, will have to be filled immediately. Legislation that supports the complete process will be put forward during the spring sitting of the Legislature.

Premier Ghiz states, “There is no cause for concern among sitting members of the ABCs. This process is intended to fill vacancies, to provide Islanders with information about their Agencies, Boards and Commissions, engage them in the governing process and enhance the transparency of the appointments process. “

Those interested in applying for positions with specific Agencies, Boards and Commissions should send a letter to Executive Council, PO Box 2000, Charlottetown, PE C1A 7N8, that highlights their qualifications and relevant volunteer experience. The letters will be kept on file for approximately two years. When vacancies occur, they will be filled from the file.
