PEI to Host the National ArtsSmarts Exhibit and Learning Symposium

The fourth annual National ArtsSmarts Exhibit and Learning Symposium is being held at the Confederation Centre of the Arts October 17-19.

ArtsSmarts is a renowned national program that advances learning through the arts. Through creative projects, students learn to think critically, to work collaboratively, and to reach high levels of expression. This week’s exhibit will showcase ArtsSmarts projects from across the country that celebrate the achievement of learning outcomes through diverse art forms.

“ArtsSmarts is a wonderful program that helps students learn through hands-on involvement in the arts,” said Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour. “I am pleased that our government has chosen to sustain funding for ArtsSmarts. We understand its value in helping students develop a lasting appreciation of the arts.”

PEI has participated in the program for four years. During that time, the program has brought thousands of Island students and teachers together with local artists to learn curriculum through dance, drama, music and the visual arts.

“Over those four years, the ArtsSmarts participants have left a lasting legacy of innovative teaching and learning practices, as well as some very beautiful art work, in our schools,” said Education Minister Gerard Greenan. “We are pleased to lend our continued support to this excellent program.”

The event begins Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at Confederation Centre of the Arts:

• 5 p.m. – official opening of the national exhibit at the Studio Theatre.

• 6 p.m. – Artist and Teacher Appreciation Event at Memorial Hall.

The learning symposium will feature such distinguished guest speakers as:

• Dr. Gail Burnaford of the University of Florida

• Penny Milton, CEO of the Canadian Education Association

• Michael Blondeau who has achieved international recognition for his innovative contributions to the new media industry
