Debt Collection Practices Must Not Violate the Rights and Responsibilities of Consumers

Office of the Attorney General

The Office of the Attorney General is reminding Islanders that certain debt collector practices are restricted by the law. Anyone collecting debts in Prince Edward Island must comply with consumer protection laws. All collection agencies operating in the province must be licensed pursuant to the Collection Agencies Act and must comply with its regulations.

Debt collectors are not permitted to:

• use coercive language to make you pay

• threaten that you'll lose your job if you don't pay

• contact you at your workplace

• abuse or intimidate you to make you pay

• harass you by constantly phoning you

• contact you outside the hours of eight in the morning to nine in the evening or on Sunday

• contact or threaten to contact your employer, friends or relatives, except to get your address

• give false or misleading information about you to any other person

Islanders with concerns about any aspect of debt collection, or who would like more information, can contact Consumer Services at 368-4580, Toll free at 1-800-658-1799 or www.gov.pe.ca/go/consumerservices
