Awareness Can Protect Public Against Telephone Scams

Office of the Attorney General

The Office of the Attorney General and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police “L” Division are advising the public that a telephone scam may be operating in Prince Edward Island.

Follow these guidelines if you receive an unsolicited call from someone offering to help you with your debts:

• DON’T do business with them unless you know who they are and have their exact physical address.

• DON’T do business with them unless they are registered to do business in Prince Edward Island or have their head office in our province.

• GO TO www.gov.pe.ca/corporations/index.php or phone 368-4550 to find out if a company is registered to operate in Prince Edward Island.

• NEVER give out your credit card information to companies you don’t know who are offering to help you with your credit card debt.

If you have, or think you may have, been victimized, contact Consumer Services at 368–4580, Toll Free at 1-800-658-1799 www.gov.pe.ca/attorneygeneral, the RCMP in your area, or Phonebusters at 1-888-495-8501.
