Preparations for the 2012 Atlantic Canada International Air Show are well under way and will once again be held in Summerside. The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue; Ms. Paula Biggar, MLA for Tyne Valley - Linkletter; His Worship, Basil Stewart, Mayor of the City of Summerside; and corporate sponsors today announced funding to support this year’s event.

“Our Government is pleased to invest in the 2012 Atlantic Canada International Air Show; this event is expected to draw visitors from across North America,” said Minister Shea on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie. “Tourism is a key economic driver for our local economy, and this investment reinforces our government’s commitment to supporting this important industry.”

Air Show officials announced the return of several major sponsors to the event: Mark’s Work Wearhouse is this year’s presenting sponsor. The Atlantic Superstore, Save Easy and Vector Aerospace have all renewed sponsorship commitments for 2012, and the Confederation Bridge, President’s Choice Banking and MasterCard have joined as new event sponsors.

“This year’s line-up of performers and attractions at the Atlantic Canada International Air Show are world-class,” said Ms. Biggar on behalf of the Honourable, Allen Roach, PEI Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning. “The event is an excellent tourism initiative for Prince Edward Island and an opportunity to display the growing aerospace cluster at Slemon Park.”

The Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds and the CF-18 Hornet and the US Navy Blue Angels are all confirmed for the summer line-up.

Mayor Stewart stated, “Last year’s Atlantic Canada International Air Show was a wonderful event and we are pleased that it will be returning to Summerside this year. Special thank you to the organizers, sponsors and participants who are working very hard to put on another great show for the thousands of spectators that will be in attendance.”

Organizers are pleased with the progress of planning for the 2012 program, the event website has been launched, and more acts will be announced as the event draws near.

“It is great to receive support from all levels of government, and we are quite pleased to have attracted significant partners from the corporate community,” said Colin Stephenson, Executive Director of the Show. “Additional acts like Aerobatics, Vintage aircraft and others have been even more interested in coming as they see what we have attracted on the military side. This is made possible thanks to having such a great array of sponsors in place.”

The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, will invest $45,000 in the hosting requirements for this year’s Air Show. The Government of Prince Edward Island will contribute $45,000 towards the 2012 event.
