The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and the Honourable Ron MacKinley, Prince Edward Island Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, today announced support for the PEI Aquaculture Alliance. The organization has plans well underway for an Oyster Conference to be held from November 13th to 15th, 2013, at the Rodd Mill River Resort.

“I am pleased to announce our Government’s support to the PEI Aquaculture Alliance as they prepare for the PEI Oyster Conference,” said Minister Shea. “This gathering of stakeholders is a proactive opportunity to share and discuss developments that will best position the industry for increased success in the global market.”

The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, is contributing $35,000, while the Government of Prince Edward Island will contribute $25,000 through the departments of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development and Innovation and Advanced Learning.

“The province is pleased to provide funding for this oyster conference which will host industry representatives from North America and Europe,” said Minister MacKinley. “Prince Edward Island’s oyster industry employs many Islanders and it makes a strong contribution to the provincial economy. The industry will benefit from the opportunity to exchange ideas and expertise to ensure continued growth and sustainability for the sector.”

The PEI Oyster Conference has been created to share industry knowledge in the areas of financing, tracking and traceability, market development, business management and export readiness. The conference is open to all involved or interested in the oyster industry. For more information, visit, or call 902-368-2757.

“Hosting a dedicated event that brings together the PEI oyster industry with supply chain contacts from Canada, the United States and Europe will drive knowledge sharing and new relationships,” said Ms. Ann Worth, Executive Director, PEI Aquaculture Alliance. “All Canadian oyster companies are invited to join us in beautiful rural Prince Edward Island for this valuable two-day program that will engage, focus and energize us in celebration of our proud oyster heritage. This may be the best networking and educational event of the year.”
