Federal, provincial officials meet on future of Province House

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal

Federal and provincial officials met in Ottawa on March 4 to discuss possible renovations to Province House, Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey said.

“We had some excellent discussions with Ministers Leona Aglukkaq and Gail Shea and our other federal colleagues about the future of Province House,” Minister Vessey said. “It is an irreplaceable piece of Canadian history, and both parties agree that we must do what it takes to return this national treasure to its original condition.”

Minister Vessey and Leader of the Opposition Steven Myers represented the province on behalf of the Legislative Management Committee. Both federal and provincial leaders agreed to have further discussions about short and long-term renovations to the 166-year-old landmark.

Parks Canada, which is responsible for maintaining Province House as a National Historic Site, commissioned an architectural report this past year that indicated areas where the building needed structural and other repairs.
