If the turnout on Friday at Le Festin Acadien Avec Homard in Abram-Village was any indication, this year’s Fall Flavours Festival will be bigger than ever. “2014 is a big year in PEI, and all Festival event organizers have worked really hard to take their events to another level,” says Chef Austin Clement, vice-chairman of the Prince Edward Island Culinary Alliance. “Le Festin, selling out with guest host Food Network Celebrity Chef Corbin Tomaszeski, shows just how excited people are about the Festival.”

Fall Flavours officially kicks off this weekend with the first of its eleven Signature Events this month. New this year, Feast Of The Fathers, at the Culinary Institute of Canada, is hosted by Food Network Celebrity Chef Lynn Crawford on Saturday, September 6. Chef Crawford is also hosting the sold out Lobster On The Beach on Sunday, September 7, at West Point. Also featured this weekend is the PEI Beer Festival at the Delta Prince Edward on Friday, September 5, and Saturday, September 6, with a large crowd expected.

“The plan to build the Festival using Food Network Celebrity Chefs hosting its Signature Events is working,” says Chef Clement. “When we put chefs like Lynn Crawford, Mark McEwan, Anna Olson and Chuck Hughes right in front of people and they show what they can do, people are amazed. They want more, and Fall Flavours is just the way to get it.” PEI’s own internationally recognized Chef Michael Smith, Chef Corbin Tomaszeski and Chef Massimo Capra are the other Food Network Celebrity Chefs hosting at the Festival in 2014.

“Another new Signature Event this year, Oysters on the Pier, hosted by Food Network Celebrity Chef Chuck Hughes is also already sold out, and interest is very high for other Signature Events hosted by Chef Chuck Hughes, PEI Lamb Luau at Rodd Crowbush Golf & Beach Resort on September 14 and Toe Taps and Taters on September 26,” says Chef Clement. “We encourage people to get all their festival purchase tickets early to avoid being disappointed,” he notes.

“Culinary Events are also attracting a lot of attention,” says Chef Clement. “People are keen to try our new Culinary Events: Culinary Institute’s Chef Series, Feast Alfresco at the Farm Centre, Sir Andrew MacPhail’s Heritage Meal, The Winemakers Dinner, Fun Family Food Festival at the Farm Centre and Combinations - Chef's Demo & Live Music at Stanley Bridge Country Resort.”

Apart from the scheduled Culinary Events, the Festival features an extensive Restaurant Dining program. Restaurants feature special fall-inspired menus, with more than twenty participating restaurants across PEI. A complete list of restaurants and menus are available at www.fallflavours.ca. Patrons also have the opportunity to win Fall Flavours foodie prizes by snapping a #foodselfie at any of the participating restaurants and entering the online contest.

“Great food, great venues and some of the finest chefs on the planet - it’s going to be incredible, with something for everyone,” says Chef Clement. “I encourage Islanders to take full advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a truly world-class culinary experience.”

The Fall Flavours Festival, held at venues across Prince Edward Island from September 5-28, is an initiative of the Prince Edward Island Culinary Alliance. The Culinary Alliance is a partnership between the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Prince Edward Island departments of Tourism and Culture, Innovation and Advanced Learning, Agriculture and Forestry, and Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, as well as industry representatives. The Alliance was created to develop innovative food industry partnerships, culinary experiences and promotional programs.
