As deadlines quickly approach for many university and college applications, the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning is offering students valuable tips on how to apply and reminding them of the programs and resources that can help them save money, says Minister Allen Roach.

“Post-secondary education is one of the most important investments you can make in your future. Our government is working to ensure that Islanders continue to have access to high quality, affordable post-secondary education and training programs,” said Minister Roach.

Students should follow these tips when applying for college or university:

• Before you apply, research the background, trends and outlooks for common occupations so you can make an informed decision about your education and future career.

• Talk with people in the program or profession that interests you.

• Review the admission requirements to make sure you meet them before you apply.

• Be aware of your deadlines – they are different for college and university, and many vary from school to school, and sometime even program to program.

• If you’re applying to a high-demand program, you may increase your chances of getting accepted if you send in your application early.

• If you need financial assistance, be aware of the application deadlines and apply in a timely manner to ensure your funding arrives when you need it.

• If you have any questions or concerns about an institution or their application process, contact their admissions department. Educational institutions are always open to talking with prospective students.

Providing access to affordable, high-quality post-secondary education that equips students with the skills they need to succeed is a priority of the Government of Prince Edward Island.

Eligible Island students enrolled in full-time studies at UPEI, Holland College, Collège Acadie Î.-P-É., or Maritime Christian College may be eligible for bursaries and awards offered by the Government of Prince Edward Island. There is no application for these awards. The post-secondary institution will send a list of eligible students to Student Financial Services for review. Bursaries, awards and scholarships issued by the Government of Prince Edward Island include:

• George Coles Bursary

• Island Student Award

• Island Skills Award

• George Coles Graduate Scholarship

• Medical Residency Interest Relief Program

• Community Service Bursary

• Marine Atlantic Bursary Program

To support Island students and increase the affordability of post-secondary education, the province has awarded $16.7 million in bursaries, awards and scholarships over the past five years. In addition, zero per cent interest on provincial student loans was introduced in fall 2012.
