Premier Ghiz expresses condolences over the passing of Charlie Sark

Premier's Office

Premier Ghiz today expressed condolences over the passing of Mi’kmaw Elder, former Chief and longtime community volunteer Charlie Sark.

“There are few people on Prince Edward Island who put as much time and as much passion into making this province a better place for all citizens,” said Premier Ghiz. “Not only was Charlie a tireless advocate for the Island’s indigenous people and a tremendous promoter of Mi’kmaw culture, but he also served on dozens of volunteer community boards and associations over the years. His sage advice and guidance have always been incredible assets to organizations across the province. He will be sorely missed.”

Charlie Sark was a former Chief of the Lennox Island First Nation. He was also an internationally renowned basket weaver whose works have been exhibited all over the world. He and his wife Doreen own Indian Art & Craft of North America, which is one of the oldest family-run aboriginal businesses in Eastern Canada. They have two children, Charlie Greg and Sarah.
