Premier Wade MacLauchlan has announced that he will introduce new conflict of interest requirements for deputy ministers and senior political advisors as part of an enhanced emphasis on openness and transparency within government.

“New conflict of interest requirements for senior officials will provide clear restrictions on investments or involvements with firms doing business with government, as well as build public confidence in government,” said the premier.

Premier MacLauchlan announced that two steps will be taken to heighten restrictions. First, government will extend conflict of interest requirements to deputy ministers and senior political advisors, similar to the restrictions currently in place for ministers.

Second, government will extend post-employment restrictions to deputy ministers and senior advisors, similar to those currently applicable to ministers.

Government will continue to consider additional measures to increase transparency and accountability.

These measures will be confirmed during the next sitting of the Prince Edward Island legislative assembly.

Premier MacLauchlan outlined government’s commitment to introduce these requirements during a presentation to senior public servants.

The premier also highlighted the importance of continuously looking for new ways to obtain input from Islanders and communities to inform government decisions and priorities.

“Government must conduct and make choices with people and communities in mind,” said the premier. “We will show initiative and openness to measures that will bring change.”
