Get prepared to stay safe in an emergency

“During the past several months, severe weather created numerous challenges for Islanders, and our first responders have gone above and beyond in helping Islanders,” said Minister Sherry. “Plow operators faced many difficult conditions as they escorted emergency officials to help Islanders in need, and we thank all our plow operators and first responders for their dedication this winter.”
During an emergency, it is important to follow instructions from emergency officials to stay safe and allow police, fire, ambulance and other emergency officials the ability to respond to emergencies.
If an emergency happens, it may take emergency workers some time to reach Islanders in need of help, so it’s essential that everyone makes an emergency plan to keep each member of their household safe until help arrives.
Emergency preparedness involves three basic steps:
1. Know the risks
2. Make a plan
3. Create an emergency kit
“An emergency can happen any time of the year, so we all need to be prepared to take care of our families for a minimum of 72 hours,” said Provincial Emergency Management Coordinator Tanya Mullally. “Every household has unique needs in an emergency, so it’s important to adjust your emergency plans to respond to the specific needs of each member of the family.”
The PEI Emergency Measures Organization has partnered with PEI Humane Society, the PEI Seniors Secretariat and the PEI Council of Persons with Disabilities to share emergency preparedness tips for every member of the family.
