Minister Murphy Meets with French Consul General

On Wednesday, May 14, 2003, the Minister responsible for Acadian and Francophone Affairs, the honourable Mitch Murphy, met with Mr. Michel Freymüth, French Consul General for Atlantic Canada. The meeting took place at Province House, where Minister Murphy and Mr. Freymüth had a chance to discuss numerous opportunities for increasing cooperation between Prince Edward Island and France. Possibilities discussed during the meeting included youth and cultural exchanges, educational opportunities and tourism promotion.

In addition, discussions touched on French expertise in diversifying agricultural crops and Island aquaculture expertise as well as the twinning of Island and French municipalities.

The proximity of St-Pierre & Miquelon, French territory off the coast of Newfoundland, was highlighted as a facilitating factor in developing increased cooperation between France and Prince Edward Island.

While visiting the Island, Mr. Freymüth also had the opportunity of meeting with Premier Binns, Minister MacFadyen and share lunch with Wilfred Arsenault, MLA for Evangeline-Miscouche. Mr. Freymüth was a guest in the Speaker's gallery at the opening of question period in the Legislative Assembly and had the opportunity to tour Province House. During the second day of his visit, he had the opportunity to meet with numerous associations representative of the Acadian and Francophone community of PEI.

With offices in Moncton and Halifax, the French Consul General for Atlantic Canada is one of two foreign diplomats based in the Maritimes.
