First Government French Language Services Report Released

Executive Council

The Government of Prince Edward Island released today its first-ever comprehensive report on French language services within government. The report contains highlights and accomplishments by government institutions in the provision of French language services from April 1, 2000 to March 31, 2003.

In addition to the departmental highlights, the report also presents the mechanisms by which the delivery of French services is made possible, whether through agreements with the Federal government or other cooperation agreements.

“This report on French language services is significant in that it demonstrates the progress made by government institutions in offering services in French over a period of three years,” said the Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister responsible for Acadian and Francophone Affairs.“ A significant amount of work has been accomplished by government institutions, over the period covered by this report, in the support and development of the Acadian and Francophone Community, in collaboration with the French Services Coordinators Committee, an interdepartmental group, whose advice and assistance is instrumental in implementing the act.”

The second part of the report includes comments from the Acadian Communities Advisory Committee on the progress made by government in providing French services and supporting the development of the Acadian and Francophone community of the Island.

The proclamation process of the French Language Service Act began on April 1, 2000.
